Dois Irmãos: Sunrise or Sunset Hike in Rio?

Updated October 28, 2026 · 6 min read

Rocky summit path overlooking Rio beaches and steep green mountains

For most visitors, a guided daytime hike is the sensible compromise. Sunrise gives cooler conditions and softer light but requires a very early approach; sunset adds the problem of descending and leaving after dark. The guided Dois Irmãos hike in Vidigal is the most-reviewed Dois Irmãos hike in the current selection.

The listed tour has 677 reviews, a 4.9 rating and a price from €42.50. Another product explicitly offers sunrise or sunset. Confirm the exact meeting point, whether local transport inside Vidigal is included, and what happens if weather or security conditions change.

The access issue matters

The usual route reaches the trail through Vidigal. Official travel advisories from several countries warn against entering favelas, even with a guide. A local guide can organise the route and respond to local information, but cannot guarantee safety. Read the advice for your nationality and make your own risk decision before booking.

Never follow a navigation app into an unfamiliar community or arrive assuming you will find the trail alone. If the operator changes or cancels the route because of a police operation or local warning, accept the decision.

How hard is the hike?

The climb is short compared with a full-day mountain trek, but it is steep enough to be uncomfortable in heat and humidity. Wear shoes with grip and carry water. After rain, roots and rock can be slippery. Heavy rain also raises Rio’s landslide risk, so a guide’s cancellation is not a minor inconvenience.

Cloud can erase the view at any time of day. Sunrise is not automatically clearer, and sunset is not guaranteed to be colourful. Treat the hike as the experience and the panorama as weather-dependent.

Our recommendation

Choose the guided daytime Dois Irmãos hike if you accept the official safety warnings and want the simplest return. Pick sunrise only when the operator confirms the meeting and transport plan. We do not recommend sunset to travellers uncomfortable leaving Vidigal after dark. Compare other mountain routes on the Rio hiking tours page.
